Owl Link: The Link Bio That You Own

Welcome back! Glad to have you here again as we explore all of the creative applications being built on the Stacks blockchain! It’s honestly one of the most fascinating and powerful protocols out there. Not only is Stacks secured by the oldest, the most secure, and the most decentralized blockchain created, which obviously is Bitcoin, but Stacks Dapp developers are also features that many general users will find attractive and want to use.

Today I wanted to bring your attention to the Dapp, Owl Link. It bills itself as “the only bio link that stays forever.” Owlink is definitely appealing and is a Dapp that I am actively using. In today’s hustle and bustle culture online, it is hard to keep track of your accomplishments and successes that you can use to demonstrate your expertise and skill.

This is especially true if you work online as a content creator, writer, coder, or other kind of digitally native job, to be honest. Having an established portfolio is how you obtain new clients and find better jobs. Without a portfolio, you are basically stuck doing piecemeal work on content farms that pay ultra-low wages.

It is well known that having an easy-to-understand portfolio will enhance your chances of landing your next job or client. Owl Link gives you the ability to provide links to your work in a way that is easy to navigate and understand. I will show you what it looks like to use the Owl Link Dapp.

Getting Started

In order to use Owl Link, you will need a .btc name. but no worries, you can acquire one of these at btc.us.

It is super easy to get one. It only costs 2 STX for 5 years! At the current price of STX, it’ll cost you roughly 90 cents to get a .btc name. As stated in my previous articles, you will need to download a stacks wallet to interact with Dapps. I highly recommend Leather Wallet, which was Hiro wallet until they were bought out recently, or Xverse Wallet. You can’t go wrong with either one.

Once you follow all the steps and you are set up with a BTC name, head back over to Owl link. You will be greeted with this home screen:

Click on the go-to dashboard, and that will get you to the home screen. As you can see, I already have mine up and going, but you can a gist of what it looks like when you enter the Dapp.

The Dapp is pretty minimalist, which I like because it keeps your focus on the information that you want to share with your potential clients.

On the left side of the screen, this is where all the action happens. You will add all of your bio information on the top of the screen there, and it will appear in the center of the screen, as seen with my link page. You can add links to all of the major social media websites, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, Telegram etc.

As you can see, the icons will be displayed below. I currently have X (Twitter) and Sigle icon on my bio. In addition to the social links, you can also link to the portfolio of work that you have all around the internet siloed on different websites. As a writer, I find Owlink incredibly helpful in aggregating my writing portfolio for a wider audience.

If you are into NFTs, you can also add your NFT collection to your bio as well. I personally don’t use this feature, but if you are so inclined to do so, you have that option!

Why Should I Consider Using Owl Link?

The world is changing, and the way we use the internet is changing right before our eyes. I don’t like to use the term “web3” because I think it has negative connotations and doesn’t really mean anything to the regular people out there.

I do believe that the way we use the internet is evolving and will be more decentralized and secure as time goes on. The days of trusting a centralized service to manage and store our data is over. It has been proven time and time again that third parties are unable to keep your data safe. Let me share with you some crazy statistics about cyber hacking. Stats are courtesy of Astra:

  • 33 billion accounts will be breached in 2023

  • 2328 cybercrime happen every day

  • Over the last 21 years, cyber crimes have impacted 6.5 million people and cost $26 billion in damages.

  • The global annual cost of cybercrime is $8 Trillion

  • Cybercriminals earn $1.5 trillion every year and attack small businesses 43 percent of the time

Our data is not safe with these companies, so I see the evolution of the internet as a transition over to a system where data can be safely stored by the user instead of a large corporation.

Owl Links uses the Stacks blockchain to store your information securely. As long as you have the private key to your .btc name, your data will be secured forever.

Businesses Fail

There are plenty of 3rd party link bio companies that you can use to highlight your portfolio of work, but how long will these companies be around? Most of these companies are probably not profitable or operating on very thin margins. It’s not even entirely clear how some of these companies make money.

If you are happy with paying a monthly fee, potentially having your personal data harvested and sold to the highest bidder, and living with the perpetual threat of losing your data, these 3 party vendors could be a fit for you.

If you want to be secure in the fact that your data isn’t being harvested and sold to the highest bidder and only you have access to your data, then Owl Link is the way to go. I have used Owl Link for close to a year and haven’t had a problem with the Dapp at all. I highly recommend using Owl link over a 3 party vendor.
