MulitSig Wallets Coming To Stacks.... Soon!

Stacks developers have been on a roll recently, unveiling new and exciting Dapps. If you have been around the Stacks ecosystem lately, you know about the upcoming launch of sBTC and the Nakamoto protocol upgrade.

I predict when both of these are released and implemented; there is going to be a flood of new capital coming into Stacks. That day is soon at hand, but that’s not what I want to talk to you about today. I want to talk about Asigna and how they are bringing multisig to Stacks!

This is a product that I have been waiting for a very long time to see come onto the Stacks scene. Bitcoin has had multi-sig capabilities for a while now and has seen large-scale investments and development from companies such as Casa, Unchained Capital, and Nunchuk.io. These are well-developed multi-sig solutions that the average Bitcoiner uses on a regular basis.

On the other hand, Stacks has only been around since 2018 and is considered a relatively new blockchain, and also it has its own coding language that needs to be learned by developers. That being said, new solutions are being created on Stacks all the time as the ecosystem matures.

I wanted to bring your attention to Asigna and what they bring to the table. Asigna, as far as I can tell, has created the first multsig solution built on Stacks. This is a Dapp that is sorely needed in the Stacks ecosystem.

If you have significant holdings of STX right now, you don’t have much in terms of extra security to protect your investment. Xverse and Leather are excellent hot wallets that enable you to do a ton of things, but if someone gets ahold of your private keys, poof, your STX are gone for good.

Bitcoiners have the option to create a 2 of 3 multi-sig or 3 of 5 multi-sig with no issue. Stackers haven’t had that option until now. If you wanted to put your STX in cold storage, the best option you had was to buy a hardware wallet from Ledger. Mind you, this wasn’t even an option until this summer. So, Stackers have been put in a precarious position of keeping their holdings solely in a hot wallet for a while now.

Now, with Asigna, it is (almost) possible to create a multi-sig wallet natively on Stacks and create a multi-sig wallet for your STX. As always, I will provide screenshots to walk you through the whole experience from start to finish! So, let’s dive in!

Home Screen

After you go to the Asigna website, you will be greeted with this home page.

Here, you can see that Asigna supports Bitcoin, Ordinals, BRC20, and Stacks. It seems like its aim is to be your one-stop shop for everything Bitcoin and Stacks. Big fan of this mission, to be honest. You will want to use theese wallets to interact with this Dapp: Leather (formerly Hiro) Xverse or Unisat. All these are superb wallets that provide an excellent user experience.

As you can see, the Stacks Multisig option hasn’t launched just yet, but the Bitcoin multisig feature is up and ready to go. Click on the Bitcoin multi-sig button, and you will be taken to this screen.

Connect Wallet

On this screen, you will connect your Leather, Xverse, or Unisat wallet to the Asigna Dapp. Ensure you are logged into your wallet before you connect, as it will make this process much smoother. After you hit the button, you will be prompted to connect your wallet.

This is where the fun begins! After you connect your wallet to the Asigna Dapp, you will be prompted to create a new multi-sig vault for your Bitcoin in a self-custodial way. There is no need to depend on a third party to secure your Bitcoin! After connecting to the Dapp, you will be presented with this screen, where it will ask you to create a new vault. If you are following along, it should look like this.

Create Vault

You can name it whatever you like. After you name your vault, it will take you here, where you can add which addresses are allowed to sign transactions and what the threshold is to confirm a transaction. You can add up to 20 signers, which is significantly more than mainstream Bitcoin companies offer. You can get this security without paying a penny to a third party. How nice is that?

Adding Signers

Here is what it will look like after adding multiple signing wallets:

At the bottom of the screen, you can see the confirmation threshold number. I created a simple 2 of 3 wallet just as an example.

After your vault is set up, you will be asked to share the invite code with the other signing wallets. Your screen will look like this with the associated wallets listed below.

I used multiple wallets created inside the Leather app to create this multi-sig. Simply log into the Asigna Dapp again with the wallets you added for the multi-sig to accept the invite code. You can do it however you like, I used Leather wallets for simplicity's sake.

What It Should Look Like

Once all your wallets have accepted the invitation code, your screen should look like this!

Congratulations! You have successfully created your own multi-sig vault with no intermediaries or third parties! You are looking at the future right here. Why do you need a bank to custody your money when you can keep it safe all by yourself with stricter rules on who can access this money?

Asigna's multi-sig solution is perfect for individuals, families, small businesses and large businesses alike, and non-profits! The possibilities are endless, to be honest. This app is easy to use and understand, which I believe will make this a hit with Bitcoiners and Stackers alike. Simple and secure, that is exactly what we need to help bring Bitcoin and Stacks to the mainstream.

Asigna has made the killer app, and I am super excited to see Stacks multisig launch in the next few months. Rumour has it that you will be able to Stack your STX within a stacks multi-sig AND earn Bitcoin while keeping STX ultra-secure. I will have to do a follow-up once these features become available on mainnet. For now, I hope you enjoyed my walk-through of the Asigna app and maybe want to try it out for yourself. I love it, and I think you will too! If you have questions, do not hesitate to reach out!
