Get Ready for the US Open 2023: Here's What You Need to Know!

When Does the US Tennis Open Start?

Qualifying Kicks Off on August 22, players have to win three qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw.

The main draw starts on Monday, 28 August and concludes on Sunday September 10th. The women's singles final takes place on Saturday September 9th, with the men's final concluding on the Sunday September 10th.

What Is the Prize Pool? A Glimpse at the Rewards

The forthcoming tournament boasts an extraordinary prize fund, reaching a historic high of $65 million (£51 million).

Marking the 50th anniversary of the US Open as the pioneer of equal prize money for both genders in sports, this year's figure showcases a remarkable surge of over 8% from the previous year.

As the anticipation builds, the ultimate victors in the men's and women's singles categories will each claim an impressive $3 million (£2.35 million) in recognition of their exceptional achievements.

When is the US Open Draw?

The US Open singles draw is scheduled for Thursday, August 24th. Among the 128 players, 32 will be strategically seeded.

Seedings at Grand Slam Events: A Tactical Advantage

In both the US Open and other Grand Slam tournaments, a total of 32 players are seeded. The seeding process, based on player rankings, carefully places these contenders within the main draw. The intent is to avoid clashes between seeded players until at least the tournament's third round.

The higher the seeding, the better the position, and the advantage of facing lower-ranked opponents in the initial rounds. This system is fixed about a week prior to the tournament's commencement and remains consistent throughout the event, offering players a strategic edge.

Who Is Playing?

The upcoming US Open promises a lineup of notable players, with defending champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz leading the way as top seeds in the women's and men's singles respectively.

Iga Swiatek, the 22-year-old from Poland, seeks her fifth major title after her triumphant victory at New York last year, complementing her three successes at the French Open, most recently in June.

Marketa Vondrousova, fresh from her Wimbledon triumph, joins the event as a newly minted Grand Slam champion, while Australian Open victor Aryna Sabalenka is poised as the second seed behind Swiatek.

In a record-setting 24th appearance in the Open Era, two-time champion Venus Williams, aged 43, is granted a wildcard. However, her younger sister, Serena Williams, is absent following her retirement last year.

On the men's side, Spain's Alcaraz, aged 20, arrives as the reigning Flushing Meadows and Wimbledon title holder.

Alcaraz is likely to face fierce competition from the 23-time major champion, Novak Djokovic. Djokovic returns to the US Open after missing last year's event due to Covid-19 protocols.

Sadly, Djokovic's long-time rival, Rafael Nadal, will not be participating as he continues to recover from a hip injury that has sidelined him for a significant part of the 2023 season.
