Cubi LXIX

David $mith, 1965

Mr. & Mrs. Doc $ continued their stroll through the lush forest. The Doc felt a sense of calm come over him. This is exactly what he needed. The misses looked over and caught a soft smile on Dr. $ as he gazed into the sunlit canopy above.

The Misses gently grabbed Dr. $’s hand to stop him. “You almost missed that one!” She said and pointed in the distance, towards a petrified stump. Atop it sat a brilliantly smoked cube made by none other than David $mith - one of Dr. $ favorite sculptors who was taken from the world too soon.

The Organization commissioned this piece shortly before Mr. $mith passed. But David would forever be known for his love of the cube. In fact, $mith has an entire body of work titled “Cubi” where he intimately studied the cubic structure and made larger than life compositions.

Cubi LXIX is the first and only piece he forged from Tungsten and in contrast to his other cubic works, LXIX is smowl enough to sit atop a felled tree stump. Just smowl enough to get by Dr. $’ laser eyes.

The couple spent some time observing this piece. Dr. $ shared some words from Mr. $mith with the misses that he always found rather moving. “Art is the raw density which comes from aggressiveness by men who got that way fighting for their survival.”

But beneath the cube lay a quote that he found more profound and one he had never heard.

“What Wolfr[ai]m can do in arriving at form cubically, no other material can do. The metal itself possesses art history in totality. What associations it possesses are those of this century: power, structure, movement, progress, culture and density.”
