A recent United Nations Report entitled Covid-19 and Tourism — an update takes a careful look at tourism recovery around the world.
Population vaccination levels in destination countries play a MAJOR role in recovery.
Tourists will feel comfortable to travel into environments where a high percentage of the population is vaccinated, and avoid those areas that have low vaccination percentages.
From the report:
Countries with low vaccination rates (less than 50% of population vaccinated) are estimated to see a 75% reduction in tourism
Countries with high vaccination rates (more than 50% of population vaccinated) are estimated to see a 35% reduction in tourism
South Africa as of Aug 7th has 17.22% of its eligible adult population vaccinated.
Western Cape as of Aug 7th has 21.26% of its eligible adult population vaccinated.
For tourism to South Africa to recover we need to cross the 50% of population vaccinated mark at the very least.
We have a long way to go.
Have you played your role in helping the tourism sector recover by receiving your vaccine?
