We decided to take a family trip to the Riviera Maya, located in the south of Mexico. These area is well knows for its rich archeological sites, the food and the beautiful beaches.
We picked Tulum, a small town south of the main city of Cancun, as our place to stay and explore. For our hotel, we decided to stay at the Hilton Conrad Tulum, a 5-star hotel which I'll describe in a separate blog post.
Reaching our destination was fairly easy. We decided to drive across the border to Mexico and purchase plane tickets inside Mexico. This saved us a ton of money since national fares are very cheap, even when selecting Aeromexico the top airline.
The place was called Playa Paraíso, just a few minutes from downtown Tulum, Mexico. This beach offers beautiful white sand, calm waters, no seaweed, and lots of neat places to have a quick lunch and drinks.
The beach was not overly crowded but finding a place with some shade was challenging. Luckily we were able to find a place to have lunch while we waited for an opening.
We knew this beach was very "European" but honestly we were a bit surprised as to how natural topless beach wear was everywhere. After a few minutes, it all just seemed more natural and less surprising.
The beach site is located about 4 miles south of Tulum which demanded a quick 20min walk from Downtown Tulum. There are plenty of Taxi cabs available if this walk isn't desirable or if it is too hot to walk outside in the sun. The beach head is also accessible also through the Ancient Ruins, so if you are visiting the ruins (which is a must) you can always head out to the beach and relax after a cultural experience.
There are no sidewalks, so I recommend being extra careful as some of the drivers do not slow down or even move away to give room. Also, do not attempt to take a picture in the middle of the road as the one below. We were moving from sides of the street to walk where there was more room and took a quick snap.
There were plenty of places to relax under the shade but most of them were already taken. Luckily, we found a great spot on higher ground to have a view of the entire beach. This place was an extension of a restaurant that was inland in the jungle but served drinks to the beach area. It turns out, they made on of the best Mojitos I have ever had before. The place was called Cleo, link here. This place was also awesome for selfies.
The beach was very hot and the temperatures under the sun required to stay hydrated. For drink we went for Mojitos with lots of ice, lime and refreshing mint. The best thing about Cleo was that there was no charge for using the facilities if there was purchases of drinks. The service was amazing and the Mojitos were incredible!
After a few drinks we headed back to our hotel. Walking through the jungle we found the main road and were able to quickly get a cab.
Playa Paraiso is a must go place if you are ever in Tulum or nearby areas. We found it to be very calm and relaxing despite being a little crowded. Perhaps we were lucky but we were able to find a place to eat and drink without much effort.
