HOW TO FIND YOUR CORE VALUES

When we start any project, big or small, it’s important to have a compass to keep us aligned with our goals. Finding our values for a project, whether personal or professional, will keep us from drifting into doing things that don’t cause our lives or projects to flourish. 

When we are guided by our values it means we do more than profess our values, we practice them. 

We walk our talk—we are clear about what we believe and deem important, and we make sure that our intentions, words, thoughts, and behaviors align with those beliefs.

This is an important first step. Taking the time to sit down (by yourself or with your team) and hash this out will save you hours upon hours of time you would’ve wasted working on things that don’t serve your brand.

The values you pick will also define what type of community you have & what kind of people you attract to your project. 

We wanted to give you a list of values that we use when we’ve helped others find their core values. You can also write in values that we may not have included, but these will get you started. 

The task is to pick the 3 words that are most important to you.

We know this is tough, because almost everyone we’ve done this with (including us) wants to pick somewhere between ten and fifteen. We can soften the blow by suggesting that you start by circling those fifteen. But you can’t stop until you’re down to 3 core values.

The goal is to have 3 words that best describe what you genuinely think is important in life. These will be your core values.

Step 1: Look at all the words below.

Step 2: Pick 10 words that resonate with you & what you want to do.

Step 3: Narrow those 10 words down to 5.

Last Step: Narrow those 5 words to 3 & write them in big block letters and place them where you can see them EVERYDAY. 

These words should be important, worthy, and useful. These words should guide your actions and decisions as a person, team, or company in every way. They’ll be a part of everything from how you run your meetings to how you engage with your community.
